Aerothermal

Aerothermal

Aerothermal energy makes it possible to have heating, domestic hot water (DHW) and cooling in homes or businesses, reducing the electricity bill and eliminating the use of natural gas in many cases.

What is aerothermal energy?

Aerothermal energy is the energy of the outside air transformed into heat or cold to heat homes and businesses and also to produce domestic hot water (DHW). Aerothermal energy is an innovative air conditioning system, which takes advantage of a renewable energy source ideal for any new building or for reforming current air conditioning and heating installations. This technology is capable of extracting up to 77% of the energy from the air (which is the case of appliances from some leading air conditioning brands) to convert it into heating, cooling or domestic hot water using a single piece of equipment.

The only electricity consumption required by the system is to run the compressor motor, which accounts for less than 25% of the energy needed to heat or cool a home or building until it reaches the comfort temperature.

Aerothermal energy has become a perfect substitute for gas and other combustion heating. Its benefit not only comes from the fact that it is a renewable energy, but it can also mean a reduction in the cost price of bills since the air conditioning it produces is usually 25% cheaper than natural gas and up to 50% cheaper than diesel.

How does aerothermal energy work?

Aerothermal energy works by means of a heat pump designed to generate heating in winter, cooling in summer and domestic hot water (DHW) throughout the year. All-in-one aerothermal systems (heating, cooling and DHW) are systems with high energy efficiency, and as they are considered renewable energy, the emissions of polluting gases such as CO2 into the environment are practically zero. To do all this, the aerothermal system works fundamentally by absorbing the energy of the heat found in the outside air, regardless of the temperature outside. Aerothermal heat pumps are designed to be placed outdoors and transform an existing radiator system into a complete heating system by consuming only the exact and necessary energy, making the system highly efficient.

The heat pumps used in aerothermal systems are capable of cooling because they have been designed with a reversible system (Inverter), and can manage a heating system (radiators, underfloor heating) and a cooling system at the same time (fan coils, underfloor heating).

And, why does an aerothermal heat pump save energy?

Aerothermal heat pumps are energy-efficient systems that can transform one unit of electrical energy into 4 or more units of thermal energy. For this reason, they are highly efficient and guarantee high performance even at low outdoor temperatures.

The versatility of aerothermal heat pumps allows them to be combined with other generators such as gas or diesel boilers. This quality allows the existing boiler in the house to be used and connected to the heat pump, forming what is called a Hybrid Heating and DHW System. The combination of both devices allows significant energy savings, which can reach up to 60% savings compared to systems that only use a boiler with fossil fuels.

Much more efficient hybrid systems

It should be taken into account that hybrid systems have the advantages of both technologies. On the one hand, to keep the home in optimal conditions of comfort through efficient, sustainable and renewable energy such as aerothermal energy, and on the other hand, to obtain quickly and with great efficiency the generation of heating and DHW that gas or diesel combustion systems have, since they make a necessary calorific contribution at times when outside temperatures are very low and the heat pump does not obtain good performance.

The incorporation of electronic regulation by means of an external probe allows the hybrid system to offer greater performance, since depending on parameters such as the cost of energy or the outside temperature, the hybrid system chooses when it is more profitable to operate with aerothermal or conventional systems.

In this way, the energy savings needed to heat the home are optimised, and the use of the gas or diesel boiler will only be required when a higher heating power input is needed. We could say that the rest of the time, it will be the aerothermal heat pump that will keep the air conditioning of the house at the comfort temperature, responding according to the demand made for heating, cooling or DHW.

Installation of air conditioning and heating systems by aerothermal energy

There are great possibilities for aerothermal air conditioning systems, alone or in hybrid systems, which make them an air conditioning system that provides heating, cooling or DHW as appropriate, and achieves great energy efficiency throughout the installation, with a very high savings potential, superior to conventional heating and cooling systems. For this reason, brands such as BAXI, VAILLANT, JUNKERS, SAUNIER DUVAL, TOSHIBA, DAIKIN, PANASONIC, MITSUBISHI are committed to the most efficient and sustainable heating, cooling and DHW production system on the market and which adapts to the new Technical Building Code (CTE) of September 2018 on sustainable construction and Almost Zero Energy Consumption Building.

Depending on your heating, cooling and DHW needs, you should consider aerothermal energy as an efficient and sustainable air conditioning system. The energy advisor from OSG Serveis Grup SLU will visit your facilities to analyse the process and collect the data. With our Technical Office they will evaluate all the possible options and carry out the different valuations and their amortizations, so that you can decide what to do and when to do it, as well as finance your project.

Once you have decided, installing your air conditioning and aerothermal hot water system is not too complicated, and the components involved take up very little space and are designed to be located wherever you want, in the kitchen, in the laundry room, wherever, as they do not need any smoke evacuation pipe.

Elements of an aerothermal heating/cooling system

There are two types of aerothermal heating-cooling system: the so-called Bibloc and the so-called Monobloc.

The Bibloc aerothermal systems are made up of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that contains the hydraulic module; and it must be installed in a room, boiler room or garage. This equipment requires refrigeration installation between the indoor and outdoor unit. These Bibloc systems are more complicated to install and their final installation price is higher.

Monobloc aerothermal boilers are made up of an outdoor unit that contains all the elements necessary for their operation. By not having to make refrigeration line connections, installation is easier and simpler, and this is reflected in the final price.

To be able to enjoy a heating/cooling and DHW production system for your home, residents’ association, commercial premises or industrial warehouse, the system will consist of:

  • An outdoor unit or compressor: When heating, this outdoor unit is where a refrigerant that collects energy from the air is located. This refrigerant then circulates through the refrigeration tubes in the form of gas to give up the heat and return again, in liquid form, to the outside and repeat the procedure continuously. In the case of cooling the room, the circuit has an inverter to do the procedure in reverse, cooling the inside by expelling the heat to the outside.
  • An indoor unit or hydrokit: it is responsible for transferring the heat to the water that circulates through the heating circuit: underfloor heating, fan coils or traditional radiators. This unit is small, similar to a washing machine or a combi fridge, and can also have a built-in tank for domestic hot water (DHW).
  • Heating and/or cooling equipment that is already installed to have a highly energy-efficient hybrid system.
